Explosion protection systems – comprehensive protection in explosion hazard areas

Explosion protection is much more than just individual devices – it is a complex protection system that creates a tight safety barrier. Professional explosion protection systems operate on many levels simultaneously, from prevention and monitoring to active countermeasures against potential hazards. Their key role is not only to protect against explosions, but also to minimising potential material and human losses in the event of an explosion. Each explosion protection device in such a system is precisely selected and certified to meet the highest industrial safety standards. Importantly, modern solutions allow for full integration with existing control systems, ensuring comprehensive supervision of plant safety.

Where and how are Ex zones protected?

The installation of systems marked as Ex explosion-proof is necessary wherever flammable materials are present – from petrochemical plants, through mills and silos, to paint shops or hazardous material storage facilities. Such a system may include paint shops or hazardous material storage facilities. paint shops or hazardous material storage facilities. Such a system may include specialised explosive atmosphere sensors, relief systems, decompression panels or advanced extinguishing systems. In practice, this means that the protected space is constantly monitored and all potential ignition sources are effectively eliminated, ensuring maximum safety for employees and infrastructure. Appropriately selected safety measures not only allow legal requirements to be met, but above all ensure effectively prevent dangerous incidents. It is worth noting that these systems are designed with the specific characteristics of a given plant in mind, which translates into their high effectiveness in real industrial conditions.

Professional explosion protection installation is the basis for safety – trust the experts.

Every explosion protection installation requires an individual approach and careful planning. Our specialists begin their work with a detailed analysis of the needs and conditions at the plant in order to select the optimal technical solutions. An explosion protection system is a complex structure, which is why we install explosion-proof equipment with the utmost care, in accordance with strict safety procedures. We pay particular attention to the correct integration of all components, from check valves and earthing control systems to pressure relief valves. Each installation undergoes a series of rigorous acceptance tests to confirm its full functionality and compliance with standards. What is more, we provide complete technical documentation along with certificates and attestations for all installed equipment.

Our work focuses on safety in potentially explosive atmospheres. We undertake a range of activities aimed at protecting industrial plants and enterprises against explosions in hazardous areas. We specialise in activities based on the ATEX directive, the resulting Polish legislation and standardisation acts concerning explosion safety.

Our offer includes the preparation of documents such as:

  • Expert opinions based on the ATEX directive,
  • Explosion protection document,
  • Control system analysis,
  • Assessment of conformity of machinery (ATEX conformity assessment).
  • ATEX audit and HAZOP analysis
  • Explosion risk/hazard assessment,
  • Explosion risk/hazard assessment,
  • Explosion protection

Our experience:

  • Court expert – specialisation: assessment of the conformity of machinery and production lines,
  • Position: Technical expert in machine safety – work within a Notified Body,
  • Position: Machine compliance assessment specialist – over 235 assessments of machines and production lines in various industries.

Explosion protection systems, safeguards and equipment in the light of the law

The use of explosion protection systems is not voluntary – their implementation is required by specific legal regulations at both European and national level. These requirements are based on the ATEX Directive, which comprehensively defines the principles of explosion protection in hazardous areas. In Poland, these regulations are reflected in Regulations of the Minister of Economy and the provisions of the Labour Code, which clearly define the obligations of employers in terms of ensuring explosion safety. Each explosion-proof device must meet strict technical standards and have the appropriate certificates of conformity. It is worth emphasising that failure to comply with these regulations may not only result in serious legal consequences, but above all may pose a direct threat to the life and health of employees. That is why it is so important that safety systems are designed and implemented by qualified specialists who are well versed in both the technical and legal aspects of explosion protection.

Explosion protection – frequently asked questions

An explosion protection system is a set of safety measures designed to prevent or mitigate explosions in areas where explosive atmospheres may occur. It may include suppression, isolation and venting systems, as well as special enclosure designs to protect equipment and installations from the effects of an explosion.

In the European Union, the main legal acts are the ATEX Directives: Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114) on equipment for use in explosive atmospheres and Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 137) on the protection of health and safety of workers. In Poland, these regulations are implemented in the Regulations of the Minister of Economy and supplemented by the requirements of the Labour Code.

Explosion protection systems are required wherever there is a risk of an explosive atmosphere, i.e. in places where flammable gases, vapours, dusts or mists may be present. Their use is mandatory under health and safety regulations and ATEX regulations, which require risk assessment and the implementation of safety measures in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Various types of explosion protection systems are available on the market, including:

  • explosion suppression systems – detect the early stages of an explosion and activate suppression measures to prevent the explosion from spreading.
  • explosion venting systems – enable the safe release of explosion energy from the protected space,
  • explosion isolation systems – cut off access to the hazardous area to prevent the explosion from spreading to other parts of the installation,
  • Explosion-proof enclosures – specially designed structures that enclose equipment and prevent flames from escaping outside.

Not every company, but enterprises where explosive atmospheres occur (e.g. chemical, food, pharmaceutical, paint and petrochemical industries) must have appropriate explosion protection measures in place. This obligation stems from legal requirements concerning explosion risk assessment and ensuring safe working conditions.

The lack of required explosion protection systems in potentially explosive areas can result in serious legal sanctions, such as fines, administrative orders or even temporary closure of the business. In the event of accidents, the company may be held civilly and criminally liable, and the consequences may also include compensation for injured employees.

The implementation of the explosion protection system includes:

  • Conducting an explosion risk assessment and designating hazard zones.
  • Selection of appropriate security systems based on the analysis conducted.
  • Installation, staff training, and regular inspections and testing of explosion-proof equipment.
  • Ensuring documentation and compliance with legal requirements, including ATEX certification.

The costs of implementing an explosion protection system depend on several factors, such as the size and nature of the installation, the level of risk and the type of system being implemented. The costs include not only the purchase and installation of the systems, but also staff training, documentation and ongoing maintenance and inspections. However, this investment is necessary to comply with legal requirements and ensure safety.

The required documentation includes, among other things, an explosion risk assessment, the designation of hazard zones, an explosion protection plan, ATEX certificates for the equipment used, operating and inspection instructions, and staff training.
